Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to make use of art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
